Vignettes of Red Meadow Pass Loop
July, 2027
Moments become memories. Memories are more than a captured image can share, they are deepened by what the eyes cannot capture:
the sweat borne from the beating sun, the smell of warming wildflowers dancing in angled light filtering through a forest that burned decades prior;
the sound in your ears of your beating heart and crunching gravel as you push a heavy bike up an eroded steep slope;
the strings that invisibly connect your co-adventurer and wind the gears in your mind.
A memory might appear behind eyelids while daydreaming, but is anchored in more than the visual ink of the moment.

Instead of writing a play-by-play account of the Red Meadow Pass Loop, we chose to try something different. A collection of memories, captured in handwriting during the train ride home, shared here, and paired with a photo whose content weaves itself into the memory.

Vignettes
Glacier National Park sunset over Lake McDonald. Alpenglow lighting the distance, countless winged insects climbing and diving in unison, paddleboarders rippling the calm, reflective water, sharing a dinner of random bag finds.

4th of July Fireworks erupting in every direction, celebrating our late night arrival in Whitefish.

Dry, cool air of the West; sweat invisibly evaporating under the intense sun.

Bushwacking to a wild campsite along a cold Montana river.

Early into our entry in Glacier, gravel that doesn't demand constant attention and appraisal so I can just admire the endless stream of wildflowers and ferns.

Finally getting to a place of confidence on my bike while descending long, gravel trails so that I don't have to pray, I can just let myself be led.

Sun that won't go down despite my deep yearning to retire for the day. Not being able to stay up for the sunset!

Choosing your bikepack indulgences- this time hammock and marshmallow fluff. Last time camp chairs.

The sun setting on the mountain- the show is in the east, not the west.

Turning around to discover a stunning vista has been watching you this whole time.

Feeling your body slowly reheat in the sun after a refreshing plunge in 60 degree waters.

The constant, repetitive trill of Swainson's Thrush high overhead.

The smell of wildflowers, sun heated sap and pine needles with the crunch of gravel.
Permanent grins born of the simple joy of riding two wheels with a partner, no words needed to share the moment, eyes and body at a glance speak volumes to the moment.
How good it feels to get back on the bike after pushing up a section of torn, loose, steep hike-a-bike.

Intense sweetness of a PB&J tortilla.

The moment you lie flat for the first time in your just assembled tent.

The sound of rain drops on the tent fly.

The simplicity of a perfect meal that hits every desire, fills you, and leaves only a single, easily cleaned pot to take care of.

The easy silence of pavement after hours of crunching over gravel.

The perfect, cool taste of clean water in your dust filled mouth as the dry sun heat blasts your face and body.
